Everyday life as the antithesis of celebration, and celebration as a traditional–and increasingly frequent–ritual to illuminate the existential frame conditions of living: viewed from this angle, this year’s annual thematic focus posits us as both actors and observers. The winter semester was dedicated to individual key focuses, with special attention paid to time-referenced festive culture and ritualisation in particular in terms of globalisation, commercialisation, politicisation and mise-en-scène, but also with a view to historic evolution, mutation, adaptation and expansive new de velopments in these areas. The emphasis given to the “software” of rituals was equal to that of the “hardware” of the venues of celebratory events: public space, interfaces with private life, space 2.0, ephemeral and definitive festival architecture, objects and symbols. This resulted in a thematic exhibition series shown from 1 March to 30 June 2013 at r&d offspace, Brückenkopfgebäude Ost, Hauptplatz 5 in Linz. In the context of the r&d_offspace festival, a making-of documentary chronicling the five exhibitions was presented at a public viewing event. Concept and realisation: teachers and students of space&designstrategies
