Die im Jahr 2004 gegründete und von Christa Sommerer, Laurent Mignonneau und Martin Kaltenbrunner geleitete Studienrichtung bietet ein international orientiertes Masterprogramm für interaktive Medienkunst. Die zweijährige Ausbildung in englischer Sprache konzentriert sich auf eine spielerische Auseinandersetzung mit dem Thema der Mensch-Maschine Interaktion und deren Anwendung in Kunst, Forschung, Design, Industrie und Unterhaltung. Ein Interface beschreibt im Allgemeinen die Schnittstelle zwischen Mensch und Maschine und erlaubt die Generierung, Darstellung und den Austausch von digitalen Daten. Neben den allgegenwärtigen grafischen Computerumgebungen ist in den letzten Jahren eine verstärkte Entwicklung zu alternativen und intuitiven Inter- faces zu beobachten, die diese Schnittstellen nahtloser in unsere tägliche Umge- bung integrieren. Interface Cultures ist ein künstlerisch-wissenschaftliches Studienprogramm, das MedienkünstlerInnen eine weitreichende Ausbildung für kreatives und innovatives Interface Design bietet. Gerade diese Kombination aus technischem Know-how, interdisziplinärer Forschung und einem kreativ-künstlerischen Blickwinkel erlaubt die Entwicklung von völlig neuartigen und kreativen Interfaces, die auch alljährlich im Rahmen des Ars Electronica Festivals von den Studierenden präsentiert werden. This curriculum instituted in 2004 and headed by Christa Sommerer, Laurent Mignonneau and Martin Kaltenbrunner offers an internationally oriented Master programme for interactive media art. The two-year course conducted in the English language aims for a playful approach to human-machine interaction and its application in art, research, design, industry and entertainment. In general, an interface describes the point of contact between human and machine and permits the generation, visualisation and exchange of digital data. In addition to the ubiquitous graphic computer environments, recent years have evidenced in - creasing interest in alternative and intuitive interfaces enabling integration more seamlessly into the setting of our daily lives. Interface Cultures is an artistic-scientific course of study to give budding media artists a comprehensive training in creative and innovative interface design. It is precisely this combination of technical know-how, interdisciplinary research and a creative artistic-scientific point of view that allows for the development of new, creative interfaces that are also presented annually by students in the context of the Ars Electronica Festival.
