PERSPEKTIVE Im Zentrum der Tätigkeiten der Abteilung Kulturwissenschaft steht die Arbeit an dem, was Antonio Gramsci einen „Inventarvorbehalt“ genannt hat: Das Studium und die kri tische Sichtung jener Spuren, die geschichtliche Prozesse in aktuellen Selbst ver hältnissen hinterlassen haben. Was glauben wir zu wissen? Was prägt, was wir tun? Welche Techniken benutzen wir zur Welterschließung? Wie lassen sich in der Gegen wart neue Perspektiven und Handlungsräume gewinnen? Das beinhaltet: das Kennenlernen räumlich oder zeitlich entfernter kultureller For ma tionen, die Befragung von Alltagskultur und künstlerischer Produktion, die Unter suchung von Medien und Kulturtechniken. Die Ausrichtung ist eine kulturhistorisch in formierte Gegenwartsforschung, die aktuelle Problemstellungen adressiert. LEHRE Zum einen werden die Grundlagen kulturwissenschaftlichen Arbeitens vermittelt. In Lektüreseminaren und einführenden Lehrveranstaltungen werden Klassiker und aktuelle theoretische Positionen erarbeitet. In Forschungsseminaren und Übungen werden Methoden erprobt. Zudem wird laufend nach dem Verhältnis von künstlerischer Praxis und kulturwissenschaftlicher Forschung gefragt. THEMATIC ORIENTATION The focus of the Department of Cultural Studies is to rework what Antonio Gramsci has called the “benefit of an inventory” (beneficio d’inventario): we focus on the study and critical analysis of the traces left by historical processes in and on current self-relations. What do we think we know? What informs what we do? What media and techniques do we apply to discover and appropriate the world? How can new perspectives and scopes for action be acquired in the present? We are occupied with the exploration of cultural formations that either form the historical basis or contrast contemporary culture and society. We also examine everyday culture and artistic production. The investigation of media and cultural techniques is therefore a central task. Our interest is culturalhistorically informed research into the present, thereby addressing issues that are currently at stake. TEACHING APPROACH On the one hand, the fundamentals of Cultural Studies (Kulturwissenschaft) are im parted: reading seminars and introductory lectures serve to study both classics and current theoretical positions; research seminars and workshops test a variety of methods. On the other hand, the relationship between artistic practice and theory is constantly examined and explored.
