We are currently dealing with networks of many different types
– personal and virtual, natural and artificial ones. In a time in
which the Coronavirus has brought the world to a halt and a
lot of work is done from home, we notice more than ever how
many networks are part of our everyday work routine. Despite
maintaining physical distance, we remain connected to our team
as well as our international partner network, even in the light of
this extraordinary social emergency situation.
For several weeks now, our every day work has been characterised
by online meetings and video calls, virtual conference rooms and
the testing of innovative communication tools. They all not only
help us maintaining successful teamwork, but also give rise to
new types of collaboration. Regional start-up competitions on
nature conservation topics turn into online workshops that make
interested parties from completely different regions sit down in
front of their screens. The European Parks Academy is turning into
a range of online seminars. Future nature conservation engineers
deal with designing guidance systems for amphibians or bird
impact protection measures on their PCs – for now.
In the present yearbook, we present a selection of current nature
conservation projects and the people behind them. The yearbook
illustrates who keeps the E.C.O. Network together and where in
the world our projects lead us, even if the journeys are increasingly
virtual right now. It provides information on our activities in
Georgia, for the Gesäuse National Park and the Pfälzerwald-
Nordvogesen Biosphere Reserve and introduces both the Long
Term Biodiversity Index and amphibian monitoring 4.0.
We would like to thank our clients, partners, colleagues and our
team for their solidarity and practising confidence in trying times.
No matter if you read this in your improvised home office or barely
staffed office, in your running trousers or jeans – we wish you
much fun and a great summer out in nature.

Persönliche und virtuelle, natürliche und künstliche – Netzwerke beschäftigen uns derzeit in
verschiedensten Facetten. In einer Zeit, in der das Coronavirus die Welt zum Stillstand bringt
und wir sehr viel von zu Hause aus arbeiten, merken wir besonders, in wie viele Netzwerke wir in
unserer Arbeit eingebettet sind. In einer gesamtgesellschaftlichen Ausnahmesituation bleiben
wir trotz physischer Distanz miteinander verbunden, sowohl im Team als auch mit unserem
weltweiten Partner_innennetzwerk.
Seit vielen Wochen wird unser Arbeitsalltag bestimmt von Online-Meetings und Video Calls,
virtuellen Konferenzräumen und dem Testen innovativer Kommunikationstools. Sie alle helfen
uns nicht nur, eine erfolgreiche Zusammenarbeit aufrechtzuerhalten, sondern lassen auch neue
Arten von Kollaboration entstehen. Regionale Startup-Wettbewerbe zu Naturschutzthemen
werden zu Online-Workshops, die Interessierte aus ganz anderen Regionen vor den Bildschirm
locken. Die European Parks Academy verwandelt sich in eine Webinarreihe. Angehende
Naturschutzfachkräfte beschäftigen sich mit dem Bau von Amphibienleitanlagen oder
Vogelschlagsicherungen vorerst nur am PC.
Im vorliegenden Jahrbuch präsentieren wir eine Auswahl unserer aktuellen Naturschutzprojekte
und die Menschen, die dahinterstehen. Das Jahrbuch verrät, wer das E.C.O.-Netzwerk
zusammenhält, wohin auf der Welt uns unsere Projekte – nun vermehrt digital – führen.
Es informiert über unsere Tätigkeiten in Georgien, für den Nationalpark Gesäuse und das
Biosphärenreservat Pfälzerwald-Nordvogesen und stellt den Longterm Biodiversity Index und
das Amphibienmonitoring 4.0 vor.
Wir bedanken uns bei unseren Auftraggeberinnen und Auftraggebern, Partnerinnen und
Partnern, Fachkolleginnen und -kollegen und unserem Team für Zusammenhalt und gelebte
Zuversicht in schwierigen Zeiten.
Egal ob im improvisierten Homeoffice oder im spärlich besetzten Büro, ob mit Jogginghose oder
Jeans – wir wünschen euch viel Vergnügen beim Lesen und einen schönen Sommer in der Natur.
