Summer 2021. Alarm cries and statements of sadness about the
state of the planet are in high season. A European “Green Deal”
is supposed to lead the way to a new approach on how we treat
nature, ecosystems and biodiversity. So far, nature has been in the
red.
What needs to happen to protect species and habitats in the long
term? What kind of knowledge must be established, what decisions
made, what measures taken and what solutions developed? What
does nature conservation look like in the 21st century? The E.C.O.
team concerns itself with these questions in an interdisciplinary,
international way and with great perseverance. The company has
developed from its beginnings as student projects in the 1990s
into a technology-based knowledge service provider for nature
conservation in the 2020s. Even if times are changing, E.C.O.’s
performance promise stands firm.
Just like every year, the E.C.O. team has summed up important
projects, plans and milestones in a yearbook, providing our
valued readers with insights into an extraordinarily varied project
portfolio. This ranges from new approaches to communicating
nature at night, to species protection measures in the Lendspitz-
Maiernigg Natura 2000 Site to the development of the five-country
Mur-Drau-Danube Biosphere Reserve or the organisational further
development of the IUCN monitoring & evaluation system. Natural
processes on abandoned alpine pastures are being recorded in the
Gesäuse National Park, a feasibility study on the reconnection of
riparian forests on the Sava River is being carried out. And more.
I wish you interesting hours of reading with our latest edition and
would like to add a note. At the beginning of the year, I ended my
many years of work for and with E.C.O. to be able to devote myself
entirely to the establishment and development of the UNESCO
Chair “Management of Conservation Areas” at the Carinthian
University of Applied Sciences. I can already tell that E.C.O. will
continue its positive further development under its new Managing
Director Hanns Kirchmeir.
I would like to thank the E.C.O. team as well as our customers
and partners for many years of great collaboration! I wish you all
much further success with nature conservation in the 21st century.

Sommer 2021. Alarmrufe und Betroffenheitsbezeugungen über den Zustand des Planeten
haben Hochsaison. Ein europäischer „Green Deal“ soll zu einem neuen Umgang mit der Natur,
den Ökosystemen und der Biodiversität führen. Die Natur schreibt bislang rote Zahlen.
Was muss passieren, um Arten und Lebensräume langfristig zu schützen? Welches Wissen muss
aufgebaut, welche Entscheidungen getroffen, welche Maßnahmen gesetzt und welche Lösungen
entwickelt werden? Wie sieht Naturschutz im 21. Jahrhundert aus? An diesen Fragen arbeitet
das Team von E.C.O. interdisziplinär, international und mit großer Ausdauer. Das Unternehmen
hat sich aus studentischen Projekten der 1990er Jahre zu einem technologiebasierten
Wissensdienstleister für Naturschutz der 2020er Jahre entwickelt. Auch wenn sich die Zeiten
ändern, das Leistungsversprechen von E.C.O. ist beständig.
Wie jedes Jahr hat das Team von E.C.O. wichtige Projekte, Vorhaben und Meilensteine in
einem Jahrbuch aufbereitet. Die geschätzten Leser:innen erhalten Einblick in ein vielfältiges
Projekt-Portfolio. Dieses reicht von neuen Ansätzen zur Vermittlung der Nachtnatur, über
Artenschutzmaßnahmen im Europaschutzgebiet Lendspitz-Maiernigg bis hin zur Entwicklung des
Fünf-Länder-Biosphärenparks Mur-Drau-Donau oder zur organisatorischen Weiterentwicklung
des Monitoring- & Evaluierungssystems der IUCN. Naturprozesse aufgelassener Almen werden
im Nationalpark Gesäuse erfasst, eine Machbarkeitsstudie zur Wiederanbindung von Auwäldern
an der Save durchgeführt und einiges mehr.
Ich wünsche den Leser:innen interessante Stunden und möchte noch eine Notiz hinzufügen.
Ich habe mit Jahresbeginn meine langjährige Tätigkeit für und bei E.C.O. beendet, um mich
ganz dem Aufbau und der Entwicklung des UNESCO-Lehrstuhls „Management of Conservation
Areas“ an der Fachhochschule Kärnten zu widmen. Es ist schon jetzt abzusehen, dass sich E.C.O.
mit seinem neuen Geschäftsführer Hanns Kirchmeir erfreulich weiterentwickelt.
Ein herzliches Dankeschön dem Team von E.C.O., unseren Kund:innen und Partner:innen für die
langjährige und gute Zusammenarbeit! Ich wünsche euch allen viele weitere Erfolge für den
Naturschutz im 21. Jahrhundert.
